Krekar praised bin Laden after US attack
According to the web-based paper Potsdamer Neueste Online, Mullah Krekar gave the speech in the Iraqi city Biala Friday, September 14, 2001. A recording of the speech has reportedly been circulated among supporters of Ansar Al-Islam.
Mullah Krekar confirmed to the Norwegian paper VG that he indeed held a speech in Iraq that day, but claimed that the German press got the message wrong.
«Krekar has supported Osama bin Laden in earlier tapes, but these tapes were made before September 11,» said Brynjar Meling, Krekars lawyer, to VG and claims the context in the last tape may be a misunderstanding.
The speech became known when a tape surfaced during an arrest in northern Iraq in March of this year.
According to the German news magazine Der Spiegel, the man who was arrested, Jassin F, was allegedly working as a secretary and advisor for Mullah Krekar. The two of them were reportedly close friends.
Jassin F has been applying for asylum in Germany the last six years. Mullah Krekar was recently questioned by German security police in connection with a planned attack on the Iraqi prime minister in Germany. Another acquaintance of Krekar has reportedly been arrested.
