Man gambled away millions on board ferry

A Norwegian man is said to have received NOK 4.2 million from the social security office by fraud, before getting on the ferry to Denmark, gambling alt the money away on board the ship.

The 54-year-old has admitted the fraud, according to the police lawyer.

The man is said to have taken advantage of his position as owner of a company selling health equipment. As his company's customers were entitled to get the money they spent on health equipment refunded via the social security system, the man has admitted to have demanded refunds for a range of products he in fact never ordered or sold.

«The suspect has admitted to have taken advantage of a system bad on trust», said the police lawyer.

The 54-year-old is said to like gambling machines and has explained that he wasted all the money on gambling when on board the ferry to Denmark.

The man is also charged with fraud, which is said to have taken place from 1 January 1997 to 19 June 2001.
