Politician suggests security department

The former Norwegian PM Kåre Willoch said the government must do more to protect Norway against terror attacks.

Willoch, who four years ago headed the Sårbarhetsutvalget (vulnerability committee), claims the Norwegian government has to establish a security department which continuously works to protect the country against terror attacks, reported the Norwegian television channel NRK.

Willoch said he wants security units from the police and the military to be coordinated under a security department.

Minister of Justice Odd Einar Dørum does not agree with Willoch and stated that there is no need to have a ministry which deals exclusively with terror threats. He calls attention to the fact that the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning has been established for the purpose of civil protection.

The Norwegian embassy in Riga was closed on Monday due to terror threats, and American authorities have warned against possible terror attacks in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
