Schröder wants Røkke on board gas project

The German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has invited Norwegian financier Kjell Inge Røkke to a joint gas adventure in the Barents Sea.

Røkke and Schröder have met in secret several times to discuss industry issues, reported the Norwegian daily Aftenposten.

During his visit to Norway in September, Schröder invited Røkke to establish closer ties between German interests and Røkke’s company Aker Kværner in regards to gas exploration in the Norwegian and Russian sectors in the Barents Sea.

It is reportedly Aker Kværner’s role as a leading supplier of production equipment for oil and gas, particularly offshore, which caught Schröder’s interest.

According to Aftenposten’s sources, the talks stressed the obvious: Aker Kværner has the technology and the German companies have capital and an interest to get into these markets due to Germany’s increasing need for energy. German energy companies are eager to increase their own production of gas.

According to information provided Aftenposten, the German energy industry views Schröder’s attempts to increase the gas supply as very interesting.

Schröder’s efforts have, however, not lead to anything concrete, at least not yet.

«Our policy is not to discuss any details connected to such meetings,» said Geir Arne Drangeid, head of information at Aker Kværner.
