Tamils want Norway to guarantee cease-fire

The Tamils rebels asked Norway to guarantee that the group’s cease-fire with the Sinhalese government is still valid.

Vidar Helgesen, Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Norwegian Department of Foreign Affairs, and Special Councilor Erik Solheim are in Sri Lanka trying to get the Norwegian sponsored peace process back on track.

Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Tamils rebel group LTTE, asked for guarantees from Helgesen and Solheim that the Sinhalese government still want to obey the cease-fire, stated S. P. Tamilsevan, the leader for LTTE’s political branch, according to AFP.

“He told the Norwegians that there should be political stability in Colombo if the peace talks are to continue,” Tamilsevan said.

The power struggle between Sri Lanka’s President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wicremesinghe the last couple of weeks has put the peace process in danger.
