The ultimate shopping day

Sist oppdatert:
December 23 is the day for all the slowpokes and panic shoppers, and Norwegians spend more money today than any other day in the year.

On average, every Norwegian uses his or her bankcard at least once today, and it appears as if all past records for card use will be broken this year.

«Yes, today will be the day for shopping with a card,» said Siv Kristiansen, market director at Bankenes betalingssentral, to the Norwegian television channel NRK. «We have estimated that there will be 3.5 million transactions today.»

On December 23, Norwegians will use their bank card twice as many times as on an ordinary Thursday.

«There will be more than 200 transactions in the second at the busiest time,» said Thomas Midteide, head of information in Teller, the company responsible for Visa and MasterCard, to TV 2 Nettavisen.

According to Kristiansen, Norwegians mainly shop food and the last Christmas presents. She stressed that a survey indicates that young men, particularly those living in Oslo and Akershus, who have with a high income, run around in the stores today.

The Federation of Norwegian commercial and Service Enterprises has estimated that Norwegians spend between NOK 2.2 and 2.3 billion (USD 357 and 373 million) in the stores on December 23.
