War criminal will not be extradited

Borgating Court of Appeal upholds the verdict that Norway will not extradite a 58-year-old convicted Serbian war criminal to Croatia.

The Court of Appeal supports Heggen and Frøland county court’s refusal to extradite the man and claims there is reason to believe that the 58-year-old did not receive a fair sentence in Croatia in 1996. Furthermore, it is stated that there are no guarantees that the man will get a new and fair trial in Croatia, reported the Norwegian news bureau (NTB), according to the Norwegian television channel NRK.

The Serb allegedly committed war crimes in 1991 when he served in a Serbian military division that had besieged the town of Vukovar in Croatia. In Croatia, the man was sentenced for threats, murder, and aiding in the murder of civilians. He applied and received asylum in Norway in February 1998 together with his wife and children, and the family has for the past couple of years been living in Østfold.
