Detectives investigating the death of Norwegian student Martine Vik Magnussen have today formally named 21-year-old Farouk Abdulhak as the suspect they want to speak to in connection with her murder and rape.

A photograph of Mr Abdulhak has been placed on Scotland Yard's Wanted site as efforts continue to progess his return to UK jurisdiction. It is understood that Mr Abdulhak is currently living in Yemen.

Martine, a 23-year-old business student who lived with friends in Westminster, died following a night out in London in March this year.

She had been out with her flatmates and fellow students in central London on the evening of Thursday 13th March this year and was last seen by her friends at Maddox nightclub some time between 2am and 3am on Friday 14th March.

She is believed to have left in a cab with Mr Abdulhak, who was a fellow student of Martine's at Regent's Business School and was known to socialise with Martine and her friends. Martine was subsequently reported missing to police by friends on Saturday 15th March.

After she was reported missing, officers making inquiries to trace her attended a residential address in Great Portland Street, W1. Her body was discovered at around 10.30am on Sunday 16th March partly concealed under rubble in the basement of the privately-owned flats.

Post mortem tests confirmed the cause of death as compression to the neck and an inquest opened and adjourned on 26th March at Westminster Coroner's Court.

Martine's funeral took place on Wednesday April 30, in Oslo, Norway.

Since Martine's death, officers from the Met's Homicide Command have spoken to many witnesses and gathered evidence in relation to the investigation. A file has now been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Detectives have made numerous appeals for Mr Abdulhak to return to the UK so that they can speak to him about Martine's death. Today is the first time he has been formally named as a suspect.

It is known that Mr Abdulhak left the UK on a flight to Cairo on the afternoon of Friday, 14th March 2008, and from there it is believed he travelled to Yemen.

Inquiries to secure Mr Abdulhak's return to the UK are ongoing as the investigation team continues to liaise closely with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Through them the Yemeni Government has been made aware of the UK's desire for Mr Adbulhak to return to UK jurisdiction. The Norwegian authorities have also supported UK-led efforts.

DCI Jessica Wadsworth, who is leading the investigation, said: "From the start of the inquiry we have been keen to speak to Farouk Abdulhak in relation to Martine's death. We have repeated requests for Mr Abdulhak to return to the UK and make himself available to police. This request still stands.

"We have remained in close contact with Martine's family in Norway. I'd like to thank them for their continued support for our investigation into the death of their beloved daughter. Martine's friends and associates have also been very helpful during the course of our investigation."

Anyone with information that may assist detectives investigating Martine's murder is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8358 0300; if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

We are specifically continuing to appeal for help in tracing clothing and jewellery belonging to Martine, and have issued photos of property similar to four distinctive items that have not been recovered from the premises in Great Portland St. - a 'Guess' watch, her 'Marc Jacobs' handbag and snakeskin shoes, and a pair of 'Christain Dior' earrings.

Other items she was believed to be wearing that are missing are a pair of jeans (brand not known, style believed to be blue 'skinny' jeans), and a costume silver-coloured 'diamond' ring.
