Mountaineer Arne Næss Jr. falls to his death

Norwegian Arne Næss Jr. died Tuesday in a climbing accident north of Cape Town in South Africa.

The accident occurred at a mountain in Franschoek, about 80 km north of Cape Town.

The Norwegian Embassy in Cape Town was informed of the accident this afternoon.

”I can confirm that a Norwegian died,” said Wenche Hovstad, head clerk to TV 2 Nettavisen. She did not wish to comment the case further.

”Næss left for a climbing trip at 8 a.m. this morning and fell to his death at 12:30 p.m.,” stated Etienne Terblance, police chief at the local police, to AFP.

According to the paper Dagbladet, Næss Jr. was climbing with several other mountaineers, but he was most likely alone when the accident occurred.

South African police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Married Diana Ross
According to Mona Levin in her unauthorized biography, Ness Jr., son of Kikki Næss and German Raab, was born in Germany in 1937.

Næss Jr. gained fame both nationally and internationally when he married Diana Ross in 1986. The wedding took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, with a number of famous guests present. The couple got two children together before they split up in 1999.

Mountaineer and financier Arne Næss Jr. leaves seven children behind. Næss last child was born in March of last year.

Næss has been together with Camilla Astrup, 39, of Oslo, the last five years. The couple had two children together.
