Norway considers Swedish fighter planes

Norway may choose the Swedish fighter plane JAS Gripen in stead of the American Joint Strike Fighter, a plane which was considered a Norwegian favorite.

«So far, the American plane Joint Strike Fighter has been a favorite, but now the Swedes are flying up as a strong competitor,» said Marit Nybakk, leader of the Norwegian Parliament’s military committee, to the Norwegian television channel NRK.

Nybakk claims Norwegian industry has not received enough commissions connected to the development of the american plane, something which was a requirement when Norway entered into the project in 2002.

It will be decided which type of plane Norway is going to buy in 2008.

Originally, the two alternatives were the European Eurofighter and the American F-35 Joint Strike Fighter from Lockheed Martin, but now the Americans are meeting competition from the Swedes.
