600 calls from lonely children
The number is up 200 from last year.
«You would think that children and young people are doing all right,» said Terje Haare, department head of the branch in Drammen, to the Norwegian television channel NRK. «Most of the children and youth that call are doing all right. But for the children who already have problems, the problems often escalate during the holidays.»
Lise Tørnby, national coordinator of the Red Cross hotline, said the increase is probably due to lack of contact with adults.
«Many of the children who call tell us that they are alone and feel lonely,» Tørnby said.
Red Cross employees listen and let the children put words to their thoughts and feelings.
