Abortion numbers are up
«We are surprised that there are so many,» said Eriksson at St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim to the Norwegian radio channel Kanal 24. «It was a little more than expected.»
One in four women between the ages of 18 and 80 years of age in the central Norway has had one or more abortions, according to a pull conducted by Norfakta on behalf of Adresseavisa.
According to Eriksson, central Norway is no different than the rest of the country.
«We have seen an increase of abortions of approximately two to three percent nation wide,» Eriksson said to Adresseavisa.
He is particularly worried by the high numbers among the youngest age group. Eriksson stated that the number of abortions could be lowered if people were provided with more information and the use of contraceptives.
Norway adopted the law legalizing abortion in 1978, and the law come into force the following year, giving women the right to an abortion before the end of the first trimester.
