Environmentally friendly, declared the church council in Bergen in connection with the decision to sell used tombstones. And the church makes a little extra money.

Bergen Kirkelige Fellesråd has started a campaign to remove old gravestones that are more than 25 years old and the family no longer wish or can take care of. At two of the city’s cemeteries, people can go shopping for used, cheap gravestones.

However, everybody is not thrilled by the new campaign. Several people in the community have stated that they think this is taking things a little too far.

«We don’t make much money on this arrangement, but we do make a little,» said May Kristin Røen, head of the cemetery at Bergen Kirkelige Fellesråd, to the Norwegian television channel NRK. «If this can lead to us being able to cut the grass on the cemeteries more often and planted some more flowers, then we are pleased.»
