Criminal record check before marriage

The suggestion of giving foreign women coming to Norway to marry Norwegian men the opportunity of checking their future husband’s criminal record before they arrive in Norway has been aired once again.

The suggestion was posted by Parliamentary Secretary Kristin Ørmen Johnsen in Kommunal- og regionaldepartmentet to Radio Pluss in Gjøvik.

If the women get the opportunity to check the background of their future husbands before they arrive in Norway, the department think it will prevent foreign women from marrying violent Norwegian men and becoming victims of violence.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration has formerly suggested a similar arrangement.

Sweden is currently looking into giving women the opportunity to check if their husbands to be have been convicted of violence earlier.
