Four in ten businesses use bribes

Sist oppdatert:
The survey, which will be presented at the Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry Thursday, states that many Norwegian export businesses have used bribes.

Of the 82 businesses that participated in the survey, which included large companies like Statoil, Telenor, Jotun, and Aker Kværner, more than 40 percent of the businesses have paid so-called «irregular payments.» One in 15 business leaders has obtained contracts which «are important to keep secret,» reported the Norwegian paper Dagbladet.

The survey indicate that close to 60 percent states that corruption is not acceptable, but almost 20 percent states that it is okay if there are no other way to operate in the market.

Of the 24 embassies that participated in the survey, one third stated that Norwegian businesses should adapt to the local practice, even if this means using methods that are not accepted in Norway.

The Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry is not pleased by the advice given by the embassies. Erik Lundeby, ethics manager, stated that there are too many embassies that encourage businesses to use unacceptable methods.
