Girl seriously injured in Farris wheel fall

A 15-year-old girl is in the intensive care unit at Ullevål university hospital after she fell 25 meters from a Farris wheel Sunday.

“She received severe head and facial fractures. The injuries are serious, but her condition is stable. She is receiving intensive care at the hospital today,” Marit Stenbråten, head of information at Ullevål university hospital, told TV 2 Nettavisen.

The tragic accident took place Sunday evening at Momarkedet at Mysen, in Østfold. The 15-year-old girl fell from the basket 25 meters above the ground. In the fall she hit two other baskets.

“The Farris wheel has been checked and we have not been located any faults. The accident is not due to any faults in the instalment of the wheel and we have released it,” Jørn Solheim, police superintendent at Eidsberg police department, told TV 2 Nettavisen.

The fun fair has now packed up and left the event.

According to witness accounts, the girl was waving to her friends on the ground when she lost her balance and fell out of the basket.

“The girl was sitting on the railing before she fell, according to witness accounts. In her fall she hit two other baskets,” Eivind Valland, head of operations at Follo police district, told Norwegian news bureau, NTB.

There are currently no requirements for Farris wheels to provide safety belts.

“In Farris wheels, you sit in a basket, but it is very possible to get out of one if you wish to do so. In this case, we think it was an accident,” Solheim added.
