No fine for TV comedian

Comedian Otto Jespersen will probably not have to pay any fine for his burning of the American flag on live TV, after the police lawyer who wanted to fine Jespersen has been taken off the case.

The police lawyer has been taken off the case after orders from senior police, and this is said to have caused upheaval within the police force, according to Dagbladet.

The police lawyer wanted to fine both Otto Jespersen and chief editor of TV 2, Kåre Valebrokk, after the burning of the American flag on TV show Torsdagsklubben («The Thursday Club») on 13 February.

Jespersen was charged with dishonouring the American flag and risked prison for one year.

The police lawyer is said to have wanted Jespersen and Valebrokk to be punished, but according to Dagbladet, he was ordered to withdraw the charges.

«I have never experienced anything like this for as long as I have been a lawyer», said the police lawyer after being taken off the case.
