Norwegians kill smoke trend
According to numbers presented by tobacco company Tiedemanns Tobaksfabrik, the sale of cigarettes has decreased with more than 5 percent and the sale of hand-rolling tobacco has decreased with about 10 percent during the last year. Norwegians consumption of tobacco is now approximately on the same level as 1975, reported the Norwegian TV channel NRK, according to the Norwegian news bureau (NTB).
Purchase of tobacco abroad and smuggling of tobacco may have affected the numbers, but the tendency is so clear that these factors can not be the only reasons for the decrease.
These numbers are very pleasing because they indicate that this is not just a passing thing, but we are actually facing a breakthrough and a trend change, said Dagfinn Høybråten, minister of heath, to NRK.
According to Høybråten, one of the reasons for the decrease may be the health authorities campaign this winter and the law change requiring smoke free environment at bars and restaurants as of January 2004. There is also a clear trend in youth environments that smoking is passé.
However, numbers indicate that the sale of snuff has increased with 10 percent during the last year.
