PM wants to freeze alcohol duties

Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik hopes to collect support from the other Nordic prime ministers in order to put pressure on EU to prevent further cuts in alcohol duties.

«We will get a very negative domino effect as a result of the repeated duty reductions on alcohol, moving northwards through Europe,» said Bondevik to the Norwegian paper VG. «When one country cuts its duties, others are forced to follow. We have to fight this development.»

Bondevik said that he will address the issue at the Nordic prime minister meeting on Iceland. He hopes to solicit support from the other prime ministers in order to put pressure on the EU.

«The goal is first of all to stop the further reductions of the alcohol duties,» Bondevik said, and he stated that both the Swedish and the Finnish prime ministers agrees with him.
