Sir Lanka wants Norwegian help

Sri Lanka’s President Chandrika Kumaratunga asked the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik Thursday to resume the peace negotiation work in the country.

The President asked Norway to continue as an impartial third player in order to try to negotiate a peace process between Sri Lanka’s authorities and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s office.

«I said Norway would be prepared to arrange negotiation talks if LTTE also asks us to take on that type of role,» Bondevik said.

Bondevik thanked President Kumaratunga for the confidence the Sri Lankan authorities have shown Norway.

«When we receive a request from both parties to continue, we will go in a phase where we consult with the parties regarding how the process can be brought to the next level,» Bondevik said.
